The artist has given the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which operates to protect the Britain's independent music venues.

He was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his third album People Watching was chosen as the best record of the previous year.

Fender has decided to give the cash to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role local spots had in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it hadn't been for all the performances I did around the region, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a modest fee to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

Fender also joined in, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation assisted venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues caused by floods, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and sound issues.

Additional spaces obtained monetary aid in improving facilities and gear that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The concept that money from shows in big venues helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has commented.

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected two grassroots venues in that region, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in the city and the second in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is supported by a national body and music fans who buy "stakes" in the properties.
